๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Regulation size soccer ball (size 5)
- โ Firm ground soccer cleats
- โ Agility cones or flat markers
- โ Goal with netting or a sturdy kickback wall
- โ Ball pump with pressure gauge
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Athletic grip socks
- โ Shin guards
- โ Flat, dry grass or artificial turf pitch
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Perform a 10-minute dynamic warm-up focusing on hip flexors, hamstrings, and groin before striking at full power
- โข Inspect the field for divots, holes, or loose debris where the plant foot lands to prevent ankle rolls
- โข Ensure the soccer ball is inflated to regulation pressure (8.5 to 15.6 psi) to avoid foot and knee strain
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Set Up the Angled Approach Run
Place the ball stationary on a level patch of turf. Take 3 to 4 steps back at a 30 to 45-degree angle away from your kicking side. Stand on the balls of your feet with your knees soft and your hips angled toward the ball.
- โข Player is standing 3-4 paces back at a clear diagonal angle to the ball
- โข Body weight is balanced on the balls of the feet with a slight forward lean
- โข Approaching directly straight-on from behind the ball
- โข Starting too far away and sprinting out of control
Position the Plant Foot and Bend the Support Knee
Stride into the final step and plant your non-kicking foot firmly 6 to 8 inches to the side of the ball. Point the toes of your plant foot directly at your intended target with the knee bent at approximately 30 degrees to absorb force.
- โข Plant foot is parallel to the ball, exactly 6-8 inches away
- โข Toes of the support foot point straight at the target with a visible knee bend
- โข Planting too far behind or ahead of the ball
- โข Keeping the plant leg completely straight and locked
Angle Chest Forward and Counter-Balance with Arms
As the plant foot makes contact, position your chest and shoulders directly over or slightly ahead of the ball. Extend the arm opposite your kicking leg outward to create rotational counter-balance and stabilize your core.
- โข Sternum and chin are directly aligned over the center line of the ball
- โข Non-kicking side arm is extended horizontally for balance
- โข Leaning the upper torso backward as the leg comes forward
- โข Keeping arms pinned tightly to the sides of the body
Lock the Ankle and Strike with the Instep Laces
Cock the kicking leg back at the knee, point your toes firmly downward, and lock your ankle rigid like concrete. Strike cleanly through the exact equator/center of the ball using the hard instep bone located underneath the laces.
- โข Kicking foot is pointed straight down with zero wobble in the ankle joint
- โข Impact occurs squarely on the top laces of the cleat at the center of the ball
- โข Letting the ankle go floppy or loose at the point of impact
- โข Striking underneath the ball with the tip of the toes or side of the foot
Follow Through Forward and Land on the Striking Foot
Drive your kicking leg straight through the path of the ball rather than cutting across your body. Allow your forward momentum to carry your body off the ground so you land first on your kicking foot 1 to 2 feet ahead of where the ball was positioned.
- โข Shooting leg continues forward toward the target in a straight pendulum arc
- โข Player lands cleanly on the kicking foot in front of the ball's original spot
- โข Stopping leg swing immediately upon ball contact
- โข Spinning the hips completely around and landing backward
