๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Fine-toothed metal nit comb with micro-grooved teeth
- โ Wide-tooth detangling comb
- โ Plastic sectioning hair clips (4-6 clips)
- โ White paper towels or lint-free wipes
- โ Bright directional task lamp or headlamp
- โ Magnifying glass or high-magnification reading glasses
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Pediculicide lice treatment lotion or thick white hair conditioner
- โ Gentle sulfate-free shampoo
- โ Plastic shower cap
- โ Disposable nitrile gloves
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Ensure treatment lotion does not drip into the eyes; drape a clean washcloth over the forehead during application.
- โข Do not use high-heat blow dryers directly on hair treated with chemical pediculicides, as some formulas are flammable and heat can deactivate active ingredients.
- โข Verify age recommendations on medicated pediculicides before treating toddlers or pregnant individuals.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Apply Treatment or Wet-Combing Medium
Drape a towel over the shoulders and put on disposable gloves. Saturate dry or slightly damp hair thoroughly from scalp to ends with your chosen OTC pediculicide or a thick white conditioner. Ensure every strand is heavily coated to immobilize live lice and loosen the glue securing nits to the hair shafts.
- โข Scalp and hair strands are completely covered in an opaque, glossy coat of product without dry patches.
- โข Using too little product, allowing live lice to crawl away to dry sections of hair.
Detangle and Section the Hair
Run a wide-tooth comb through the entire head of hair to eliminate all knots and snarls before introducing the fine comb. Divide the hair into four distinct quadrants using a clean parting line down the center and ear-to-ear. Secure each quadrant tightly with plastic sectioning clips to isolate your working zones.
- โข Hair is divided into four clean, knot-free quadrants with tight clip separation.
- โข Skipping the wide-tooth comb, which leads to painful snags and bent teeth on the specialized nit comb.
Execute Fine Wet-Combing by Micro-Section
Release one quadrant and separate a thin, transparent sub-section no wider than the metal nit comb (about 1 inch wide). Place the teeth of the nit comb flat against the scalp at the root and pull firmly all the way through to the hair tips in one continuous, slow motion. Angle the comb slightly so the micro-grooves catch both live insects and tiny oval nits.
- โข Sub-section is pulled taut and clear from the scalp down through the entire strand length.
- โข Starting the comb stroke an inch away from the scalp where nits are most concentrated.
Wipe and Inspect the Comb After Every Stroke
After every single comb stroke, firmly wipe both sides of the metal comb teeth onto a clean white paper towel. Under bright lighting, inspect the wipe for brownish lice (sesame seed size) and yellowish-white oval nits. Continue combing the same sub-section from multiple angles (top, bottom, and sides) until the comb wipes clean twice in a row.
- โข Paper towel clearly shows captured debris, and subsequent strokes on the same sub-section return zero nits.
- โข Rinsing the comb in standing water instead of wiping it, which can redeposit live lice back into the hair.
Rinse, Wash, and Perform a Final Check
Rinse the treatment or conditioner out thoroughly with warm water over a sink or tub, then wash with a standard gentle shampoo. Towel-dry the hair and perform a final visual inspection under direct task lighting, parting the hair at 1/4-inch intervals around the nape of the neck and behind the ears to confirm no missed nits remain.
- โข Hair is completely clean, oil/conditioner-free, and hair shafts at the scalp line are clear of white specks.
- โข Confusing white dandruff (which flakes away easily) with nits (which are firmly glued to the hair shaft and must be pulled off).
Sanitize Equipment and Schedule Retreatment
Submerge all plastic and metal combs and hair clips in water heated to at least 130ยฐF (54ยฐC) for 10 to 15 minutes to kill any residual parasites. Machine wash all bedding and clothing used in the last 48 hours in hot water and dry on high heat. Mark your calendar to repeat the wet-combing or treatment process 7 to 9 days later to intercept newly hatched nymphs before they mature.
- โข Combs are sterilized and stored clean, and a follow-up calendar reminder is set for day 7 to 9.
- โข Failing to perform the day 7-9 follow-up, which is the primary cause of recurrent lice infestations.
