๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Fine-tipped tweezers
- โ Bright directional light source or flashlight
- โ Magnifying glass
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl)
- โ Antibacterial soap and clean water
- โ Small sealable plastic bag or airtight vial
- โ Cotton swabs or pads
- โ Disposable nitrile gloves
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Never twist, jerk, or squeeze the tick's bloated abdomen, as this forces infected bodily fluids into the bite wound.
- โข Do not apply heat, matches, petroleum jelly, nail polish, or essential oils to suffocate the tick.
- โข Wash hands thoroughly after handling to prevent pathogen transmission.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Prepare Area and Don Protective Gloves
Put on disposable gloves and position direct lighting over the bite site. Part any surrounding hair and gently clean the perimeter with rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad to ensure a clear line of sight.
- โข Gloved hands visible holding hair flat away from tick.
- โข Tick body and point of skin entry brightly illuminated and unobstructed.
- โข Handling the tick with bare fingers.
- โข Obscuring the site with poor overhead lighting or shadows.
Position Fine-Tipped Tweezers Flush to Skin
Grasp the tick with fine-tipped tweezers as close to the skin's surface as possible. Slide the tips parallel along the skin so you clamp onto the tick's head or mouthparts, not its swollen body.
- โข Tweezer tips touching the patient's skin directly at the base of the tick.
- โข Tick's abdomen resting untouched above the tweezer blades.
- โข Using wide, blunt-tipped cosmetic tweezers that squeeze the abdomen.
- โข Clamping too high on the tick's body.
Apply Steady, Straight Upward Traction
Pull upward away from the skin with slow, firm, and even pressure. Do not jerk, twist, or wiggle the tweezers from side to side; wait a few seconds for the tick's barbed mouthparts to release.
- โข Skin lightly tenting upward followed by smooth release of the tick.
- โข Tick completely detached from the skin in one continuous motion.
- โข Twisting or yanking suddenly, which snaps off the mouthparts in the skin.
- โข Puncturing the tick with excessive clamping force.
Inspect Bite Site and Tick Mouthparts
Examine the detached tick under magnification to confirm the head and barbed mouthparts are intact. Check the bite wound for any remaining black specks or broken fragments.
- โข Tick clearly visible with visible front mouthparts attached.
- โข Bite site clear of dark, retained foreign material.
- โข Digging deeply into the skin with needles or tweezers to extract tiny leftover fragments.
- โข Discarding the tick before checking completeness.
Store or Safely Dispose of the Tick
Place the intact tick into a small sealable plastic bag or an airtight vial with a splash of rubbing alcohol. Alternatively, tape the tick firmly to an index card with clear tape if preserving it for identification.
- โข Tick secured inside a sealed zip bag or submerged in alcohol vial.
- โข Container labeled with the current date and bite location.
- โข Crushing the tick between fingers or with hard objects.
- โข Flushing an unverified tick when identification might be needed later.
Disinfect Bite Wound and Clean Equipment
Swab the bite wound thoroughly with rubbing alcohol or wash it with antibacterial soap and warm water. Clean your tweezer tips with alcohol and wash your hands with soap.
- โข Bite site wiped clean with an alcohol swab.
- โข Tweezers sanitized and dried.
- โข Skipping wound disinfection after successful removal.
- โข Putting contaminated tweezers back into storage unwashed.
