๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Size 5 soccer ball
- โ 4 to 6 training marker cones
- โ Cleats or turf shoes
- โ Agility poles or target mannequin (optional)
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ Flat grass or turf training surface
- โ Water bottle
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Ensure grass or turf is free from holes, loose stones, and excessive moisture to prevent ankle rollover.
- โข Warm up groin, hamstrings, and ankle ligaments thoroughly before attempting sharp rotational cuts.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (5 Steps)
Set Up the Dribble and Turn Gate
Place a starting marker cone, then place a central 'defender' cone 5 yards away. Place two exit gate cones 4 yards diagonally behind and to the side of the central cone at a 45-degree angle. This creates a realistic angle for cutting away from a retreating defender.
- โข A straight approach line of 5 yards leading to a central marker with diagonal exit gates set 4 yards to the left and right.
- โข Placing exit cones too flat, which encourages a sideways slide rather than an explosive forward-diagonal exit.
Approach with Controlled Dribbling Rhythm
Dribble toward the center cone at 70% speed using small, rhythmic touches with the laces. Keep your center of gravity low and knees slightly flexed as you close the distance. Prepare your stride so your non-kicking foot will land just beside and slightly ahead of the ball.
- โข Ball stays within 1 to 2 feet of the lead foot with short, quick steps approaching the center cone.
- โข Taking a heavy final touch that puts the ball directly onto the cone before initiating the turn.
Sell the Shot with Planting Foot and Body Feint
Plant your non-striking foot firmly 6 to 8 inches outside the ball, pointing slightly outward. Wind up your striking leg and drop your non-kicking shoulder dramatically to convincingly fake a powerful strike or cross. Keep your core braced and your eyes momentarily fixed on the ball.
- โข Plant foot planted wide with bent knee, striking leg drawn back in full shooting windup, and torso dipping low.
- โข Failing to disguise the turn by not winding up the striking leg, making the move obvious.
Snap the Ball Across Your Body with the Inside Hook
Instead of striking the ball forward, sharply pronate your ankle and chop the ball across your standing leg using the inside of your big toe. Cut the ball at a sharp 90 to 120-degree angle so it rolls clean behind your plant heel into the open diagonal channel. Keep the touch firm enough to clear your own feet cleanly.
- โข Ball cleanly snaps behind the plant heel and travels directly toward the diagonal exit cone.
- โข Hitting your own plant leg or heel with the ball during the chop.
Drop Hips and Explode into the Exit Channel
Immediately pivot your hips toward the exit cone, dropping your center of mass to shield the ball line from a trailing defender. Push off powerfully from your former plant foot and take an explosive first acceleration stride through the exit gate. Take your second touch out of your feet to reach top sprint speed.
- โข Hips fully aligned with exit angle within half a second of ball contact, followed by an immediate two-stride sprint.
- โข Pausing after the turn to admire the cut instead of instantly driving into the open space.

Don’t have everything?
- No 4 to 6 training marker cones? Water bottles, shoes, or flat markers placed on the ground
- No Cleats or turf shoes? Athletic running shoes on dry, non-slippery flat grass
